It’s been several years since Apple announced its infamous AirPower wireless charging dock, not so many years since they finally decided to cancel the launch. The company began betting on wireless charging more strongly than ever and wanted to provide users with a unique experience with the launch of a multi-charging dock fully integrated into the ecosystem. However, because it did not meet Apple’s quality standards, it never saw the light of day.

Now, and while we receive new rumours that point to a possible return of this base (although with somewhat more limited capabilities), we have been able to take a look inside what could be one of the AirPower prototypes. According to 9to5Mac, a video was recently published on the Chinese social network bilibili in which this unit is completely disassembled, presenting a very convoluted design that is more reminiscent of a keyboard than a charging base.

Among the reasons that would have caused Apple to cancel the AirPower are overheating and cost problems, and seeing these images it is understood perfectly. In this unit, there appear to be 14 copper coils, through which the energy would be transmitted to the devices. And above them, we would find a metal frame that helps to support the AirPower’s electronics. All this in a very compact design, perhaps too much.

Now, years after its original announcement, we find companies that have already achieved something similar to what Apple aspired to with the AirPower, like Nomad, with its Base Station Pro. And it is at this time when Apple could also try to launch the AirPower again, although with somewhat more basic specifications. We will see if the company is finally successful or if the base remains as another of the anecdotes of the Cupertino.
